🎤 Back from RRFM 2025 – Exciting discussions around the future of medical isotope production !

Nicolas Mario had the pleasure to present his latest study at RRFM2025, co-written with Vincent Brechin, Ph.D., Alain VALLEE and André Kolmayer, where he highlighted the future role of CANDU reactors in radionuclide production.

The full paper is available below but here are the key takeaways from this discussion:
✅ Nuclear medicine is continuing its transformation from diagnostic imaging toward therapeutic applications, a trend largely driven by the expanding use of 177Lu-labeled radiopharmaceuticals.
✅ Research reactors have historically formed the backbone of medical isotope production; however, they are no longer able to meet the escalating global demand for therapeutic radionuclides.
✅ Over the last few years, Canadian CANDU reactors have demonstrated reliable capability for large-scale production of 177Lu, offering a scalable and sustainable supply solution to address long-term demand.
✅ Consequently, CANDU reactors are emerging as a key source for radionuclide production, that could cause research reactors to redirect their focus toward innovation and R&D.

A balanced strategy combining the flexibility of research reactors and the production power of CANDUs will be key to securing global radionuclide supply in the coming decade.

Thanks again to the RRFM organizers and the international reactor community for the insightful exchanges!
